Sensory Meltdown Is Not The Same As Temper Tantrum
A tantrum is a willful behaviour that presents as outbursts when the child wants something, and it can be regulated by rewarding desired behaviours. Tantrums go away gradually as a child grows up.
A meltdown stems from sensory overstimulation, where the child reacts by screaming, breaking things, attacking others, and hurting themselves. Children with these breakdowns are unresponsive to a rewards system. It may never go away, and it’s more challenging to manage than the average temper tantrum.
Help your child overcome meltdowns using therapeutic strategies like ABA therapy. It teaches emotional regulation and communication, which helps reduce the frequency and intensity of these episodes and other aggressive behaviour.
