One to one home based therapy VS centre based group therapy
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the most efficient treatment (clinically proven to give the best results for children with traits of autism) for children with ASD and one of the most important aspects that should be considered regarding treatment is the location choice.
Parents are often confused about which model is better, ABA home-based or center-based therapy.
Before deciding on the location it’s important to understand the advantages and challenges of both possibilities so the choice that’s made is in the best interest of the child.
✔️Enables children learning skills in a familiar and safe environment where they spend the majority of their time.
✔️Skills are targeted to the environment where they’re most likely to happen and thus improving the quality of life at home.
✔️Parents can be completely involved in therapy.
✔️Logistics issues are not a concern and child is usually more focus due to the lack of fatigue from travelling.
✔️The familiar home environment may be a disadvantage initially as the child is very used to how he wants to behave and may not be happy when rules are set for him at home.
✔️Center-based usually have more teaching resources to be used.
✔️Learning is usually being done in a group. Children socialize with one another and are learning important social skills but only if the child has the prerequisite skills to socialized.
✔️If therapies aren’t generalized, the child can use a learned skill only at the center. Parents often complain that their child only behave in school but not at home.
✔️Therapists are working with groups of children which can be challenging considering different individual behaviors, and thus the program cannot be tailored to your child.
✔️The child may be learning negative behaviours from other children within the group setting.
Both models have advantages and disadvantages in practice but the decision should be made according to the child’s needs and desires.
